PROF. KANURY VENKATA SUBBA RAO

Director and Chief Technical Officer of PredOmix

Kanury Venkata Subba Rao is an Indian Biologist and is currently Director and Chief Technical Officer of PredOmix, a startup company that he co-founded. He is well known for his studies in the fields of peptide synthesis, infectious disease biology, cell signaling, and systems biology. Kanury Venkata Subba Rao obtained his Masters degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Pune 1979. Hethen joined the Malti-Chem Research Centre in Baroda for his PhD work under Prof. Sukh Dev. He obtained his PhD degree from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Barodain 1983. Subsequently, he moved to Johns Hopkins University in 1983 for his post-doctoral research at their Division of Environmental Chemistry where he worked with Prof. Miles R. Chedekel. After labouring for a long time there, he moved to join the research laboratory of Prof.Fred C. Fox in the Molecular Biology Institute of the University of California at Los Angeles. He worked there for four additional years. Coming back to India in 1988, he joined the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology where he held diverse positions as that of Research Scientist(1988– 1991), Assistant Scientist (1991– 1998), in addition to becoming Group Leader of the Immunology Group (1994-2015), and Senior Scientist (2004-2015).

Kanury Venkata Subba Rao was elected by the Indian Academy of Sciences as their fellow in 1993 and the next year, he became a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. In 1997. He was awarded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research with one of the highest Indian science awards “Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize” and also received the National Bioscience Award for Career Development in 1999. The Indian National Science Academy elected Rao as their fellow in 2000, In the same year he also received the Millennium Plaque of Honour from the Indian Science Congress. Finally, he also served two consecutive terms as President of the Indian Immunology Society (2004 – 2008).

PROF. VIJAY KUMAR

Dean (Academic)

Dr. Vijay Kumar obtained his PhD from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and received post-doctoral training at the University of Louis Pasteur, France. He was involved in the cloning of human estrogen receptor gene, solving its domain structure and establishing how hormone induces allosteric change for its DNA binding. Further, he showed the importance of receptor variant analysis in the management of breast and prostate cancer patients. Thereafter, he had an illustrious career as a staff scientist at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi where he investigated the role of X protein of hepatitis B virus (HBx) in abetting oncogenic activities leading to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). His work has shown that HBx can deregulate cell cycle by modulating CDK2 activity and mitogenic signaling, inducing ribosome biogenesis and even engaging cellular DNA replicative machinery – all working in tandem towards cell transformation. He developed India’s first HBV-related transgenic oncomouse model of HCC which has helped in understand disease biology as well as screening anticancer agents.

He has more than 110 International publications to his credit, including Nature, Cell, EMBO Journal and Journal of Biological Chemistry with a cumulative 10,000 plus citations. Dr. Kumar is a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences as well as elected fellow of National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He is also a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Medical Sciences for his scientific contributions in the field of Hepatitis B Virology. His current research interests include development of new antivirals for hepatitis B virus and epigenetic regulation of viral cccDNA for therapeutic targeting. He is an active member in many Institutional committees and presently also serving as Dean (Academic).

VIJAYAKUMAR VELU, PHD

Asst. Prof Yerkes National Primate Research Center

Dr. Velu completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Madras. Under the guidance of Dr. S.P. Thyagarajan for his doctoral studies, Dr. Velu focused on viral hepatitis, particularly on HIV/HBV/HCV co-infection. He demonstrated that confection’s of viral hepatitis in HIV infected individuals is a major problem in India. He developed Hepatitis B vaccination strategies to improve HBV-immunity in HIV and HCV co-infected patients by conducting various clinical trials on a newly developed Hepatitis B vaccine from India.

Dr. Velu completed his postdoctoral training with Dr. Rama Rao Amara at the Yerkes Research Center. During his postdoctoral training, Dr. Velu conducted studies that focused on the development of therapeutic strategies to enhance immune response during chronic SIV/HIV infection. In collaboration with Dr. Amara and Dr. Rafi Ahmed, Director of the Emory Vaccine Center, Dr. Velu identified a novel therapeutic approach for the control of HIV infection by demonstrating that blockade of a single inhibitory pathway (PD-1) results in enhancement of both cellular and humoral immune responses that lead to decreased viral levels and enhanced survival of a pathogenic SIV infection.

Dr. Velu’s current research interest and long-term goal is to understand the basic biology of anti-viral T and B cell interactions for generating effective cellular and humoral immune response after vaccination and following HIV/SIV infection. He believes better understanding the roles of cellular mechanisms involved in generating effective immune responses are needed to develop new and better vaccines/therapeutics against deadly disease such as HIV/AIDS.
